STANIEL CAY AIRPORT CLOSURE

As you may or may not already be aware, the Staniel Cay airstrip in the Exumas was closed suddenly and without warning on April 9th by the Bahamas Department of Civil Aviation. The stated reason was that it was not useable and not safe, despite the fact that numerous aircraft were using it daily without incident. Staniel Cay businesses and individuals have expressed shock, outrage, and dismay at this decision and at the lack of planning and warning given.

This airport gets a tremendous amount of use for visitors and residents alike that are traveling to and from the Exumas, to this island and many of the surrounding islands as well. We land there annually and find the runway to be just fine. Certainly repairs could be made, temporary if necessary, and a plan put in place to make long-term improvements, which are always welcome. And, hopefully, Staniel Cay will get Customs, which has been much needed at this location for years, given all the traffic.

Pilots — we would appreciate your help.
We are attempting to get every concerned private pilot to help by sending an email to the Bahamian government. The important government email addresses follow. If you have a minute, please write to help get this airport open again soon.

Thank you.
